We aim to be the world’s leading international bank. We help personal, wealth and corporate clients thrive globally, leaning on our deep heritage in Asia’s faster-growing, higher-returning markets. We have been connecting customers to opportunities for more than 150 years. Yet in a fast-changing world it is vital that we continually adapt to meet the needs of our customers and to serve shareholders and other stakeholders more effectively.

In February 2020 we set out a major programme to reshape underperforming businesses, simplify the organisation and reduce costs. We are rapidly progressing in key respects, from reallocating capital in growth markets, to investing in digital technologies to improve customer experience. These actions will position the Group to increase returns for investors, create the capacity to invest in the future, and build a sustainable platform for growth.

The significant changes in the operating environment during 2020 have made it more important than ever that we accelerate our pivot to those areas where we can make the highest returns and have the best opportunities for growth. We are increasing our rate of investment in Asia, particularly in wealth, the Greater Bay Area, south Asia, trade finance, and sustainable finance. We are shifting our focus towards fee-generating businesses, and further reducing our costs. And our updated climate strategy shows our ambition to play a leading role in supporting our clients on the road to net zero.
